DESCRIPTION:Stop Battery Fires Now: Prevention Strategies and Policy Solutions \nJuly 9\, 2026  |  9:00am – 10:30am CT \nThese bi-monthly meetings are open to the public.  \n\nSince 2011\, lithium-ion batteries have caused fires in about 198\,000 structures\, according to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) estimates. Waste and recycling collection vehicles\, transfer stations\, recycling facilities\, and landfills have suffered millions of dollars in damage and lived have been lost. As the use of lithium-ion batteries increases\, so foes the risk of fire harm to workers\, first responders\, and communities. \nJoin Us July 9. \nJoin Ryan Fogelman of Fire Rover\, Carin Stuart of The Battery Network\, and the Missouri Product Stewardship Council on July 9 to learn about the growing challenges batteries present in the waste stream and the tragedies and solutions being implemented across the country to address them. \nWhat You’ll Learn \nRyan will share insights into the causes and impacts of battery-related fires and mitigation strategies. Carin will explain the role of EPR programs in addressing fires\, including describing how these programs are funding and operate\, and the results achieved in states with and without battery EPR laws. \nWho Should Attend \nThis session is especially relevant for firefighters\, emergency responders\, solid waste professionals\, and local officials seeking strategies to prevent battery fires\, improve safety\, and better understand emerging policy solutions.
